SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=EN:12. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura - People meet
  in architecture
DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:After a series of editions of the Architecture Bien
nale directed by eminent critics and historians\, this Sector is once agai
n in the hands of an architect\, Kazuyo Sejima. The first woman to direct
the Architecture Sector of the Biennale\, Sejima has recently been awarded
the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize 2010 (together with Ryue Nish
izawa).\n \nThe exhibition People meet in architecture will be laid out in
the Palazzo delle Esposizioni della Biennale (Giardini) and in the Arsena
 le\, forming a single itinerary\, with 46 participants: firms\, architects
\, engineers and artists from around the world.\nAs usual\, the Exhibition
will present 56 National Participations to be held in the historical Pavi
lions in the Giardini\, in the Arsenale and in various locations throughou
t the city of Venice. The title of the Padiglione Italia is AILATI. Reflec
tions from the future. Organized by The Ministry for the Cultural Heritage
and Activities\, with thePaBAAC - General Direction for the landscape\, f
ine arts\, architecture and contemporary art\, it is conceived by Luca Mol
inari. The first-time national participations include Albania\, Kingdom of
 Bahrain\, Iran\, Malaysia\, Morocco\, Republic of Rwanda.\nIn addition num
erous Collateral events have been proposed by international organizations
and institutions\, which will organize their own exhibitions and initiativ
es in Venice during the occasion.\n \n“The 2010 Architecture Biennale sh
ould be a reflection on architecture - says Director Kazuyo Sejima. The tw
enty-first century has just started. Many radical changes are taking place
 . In such a rapid-changing context\, can architecture clarify new values a
nd a new lifestyle for the present? Hopefully\, this show will be a chance
to experience the manifold possibilities of architecture\, as well as to
account for its plurality of approaches\, each one of them being a differe
nt way of living”.\n\n“There will be an independent space for each par
ticipant\, in order to make them show their understanding of the theme and
their personal response to it - says Director Kazuyo Sejima. Individuals
will be showing their position towards the interaction of new social and n
atural environments\; all of which means that each person is his or her ow
n curator. This way the atmosphere of the exhibition itself will be achiev
ed through multiple points of view rather than a single orientation”.\n

SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=EN:M9. A New Museum For A New City
DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:M9 - A New Museum for a New City exhibition is part
of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition – Venice Biennale. \n
 \nAgence Pierre-Louis Faloci (France)\, Carmassi Studio di Architettura (I
 taly)\, David Chipperfield Architects (Great Britain/Italy)\, Mansilla+Tu
ón Arquitectos (Spain)\, Sauerbruch Hutton (Germany) and Souto Moura Arq
uitectos (Portugal) are the six architectural practices invited to enter a
n international competition for M9\, a new cultural pole in the centre of
Venice-Mestre\, held by the Fondazione di Venezia which has conceived and
sponsored this project and the future cultural space.\nGiven the special n
ature of the project\, in which a new construction must sit well with a hi
storic building\, the Foundation - with the consultancy of Francesco Dal C
o and in collaboration with the IUAV university in Venice - invited leadin
g professionals\, renowned in the field of museum design and\, more import
antly\, known for their sensitivity to the context\, to enter the competit
 ion. Massimo Carmassi\, David Chipperfield\, Pierre-Louis Faloci\, Luis Ma
nsilla and Emilio Tuñón\, Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton and Edua
rdo Souto de Moura were selected because their designs are dignified and n
ot outlandish and because they can provide concrete responses to the theme
s and issues posed by such a complex project as M9. \nThese practices were
asked to consider a pole comprising three different functions: a museum (
a large building designed ex novo)\, retail provision (in the existing blo
ck) and services. The participants have risen to this difficult task with
original and fascinating designs.\nThe competition approach reiterated the
specific and serious nature of a project that involved public administrat
ions and protection bodies\, and that differed substantially from other ex
amples of competitions by invitation. In a highly significant new approach
\, the architects were given a contract and were asked to work in a unifor
m and easily comparable manner\, both in terms of design and the future co
mmitments required.\n\nIt would be impossible to understand the designs fo
r the future hub without explaining its complex contents.\nWhat will M9 be
?\nIt will be a new-generation\, mixed-use and versatile museum of interna
tional appeal. This is why M9 represents a major step towards the assertio
n of a cultural identity for ‘mainland’ Venice. Equally\, it is an amb
itious experiment that develops a new museum standard applied to a difficu
lt and important theme – the history of the 20th century.\nA complex str
ucture will house the Museum of the 20th Century\, which will focus on the
major social\, economic\, urban\, environmental and cultural changes witn
essed in the 20th century. The museum will be a driving force and a cataly
st of a cultural offer and activities\, a place of learning but also an ag
ora where people can exchange ideas\, prompted by interactive exhibitions\
 , multi-sensorial exhibition designs\, talks and conferences.\nThere is mo
re: there will also be an exhibition space for temporary exhibitions and e
ducational services\, centred on contemporary subjects and emerging econom
ic and creative areas such as photography\, architecture\, design\, graphi
 c design\, cinema\, communication and advertising. A mediatheque-archive o
f the 20th century will enable visitors to consult films\, audio-visual re
cordings\, radio material and digital photographic and text archives. Talk
s\, conferences and presentations will be held in the auditorium.\nThis ne
w cultural and retail pole will symbolise the architectural and urban rela
unch of the surrounding area.\nM9 aspires to be a multi-faceted and comple
x project that responds to a need and a desire long expressed by the popul
ation of the four mainland Venice municipalities for a museum space and cu
ltural centre on a par with the most advanced European experiences.\n

SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=EN:Stanley Kubrick Fotografo 1945-1950
DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:Love of the paradoxical\, of the oxymoron\, of the
ambiguous\, is a key to the work of one of the twentieth century's greates
t filmmakers: Stanley Kubrick.\nWhile his films are known and appreciated
by millions\, few were aware until now that Kubrick was also a great photo
grapher\, in the years just after World War II.\nFrom 1945 to 1950 he work
ed\, in fact\, for the magazine Look\, a popular weekly published in New Y
ork that aimed to document social life in post-war America.\nRainer Crone\
, curator of this exhibition and expert in contemporary art\, has discover
ed and studied over 12\,000 photographs from this magazine\, which had nev
er before been critically or historically analyzed.\n\nToday we are privil
eged to present a fascinating exhibition at Venetian Institute in Venice:
not a simple collection of photographs by an artist\, no matter how import
ant\, but a series of 'stories' told in images\, forming a historically un
ique corpus through which we can read\, in clearly identifiable form\, the
great film director's style and unique flair for 'story-telling'. \n\nSpe
cifically\, this collection allows us to convincingly decipher some of the
cultural references that were to become characteristic of Kubrick the fil
m director as well\; first among them\, the theme of the artist's 'estrang
ement' from his own work of art.\nKubrick lived in New York at the time wh
en Brecht was encountering smashing success with his Three Penny Opera. An
d the future film director\, of Jewish origin\, surely recognized himself
in the German cultural trend starting with Expressionism\, and in the beli
ef that a 'stylized' portrayal of reality could be much more striking that
a 'natural' documentation. Already Proust had pointed out the particular
nature of a photographic approach to reality\, which becomes a sort of 'al
ienation' from it. In the light of Brecht's later work\, this 'alienation'
is then transformed\, in Kubrick\, into experimentation with his own emot
ions and experience before the fragment of reality framed by his camera.\n
And lastly\, we find the young Kubrick's burning interest in representing
all that is blurred and uncertain\, his fascination with what no longer ex
ists\, or has not yet come into existence. This was\, moreover\, a specifi
c characteristic of the American culture that was then forcefully emerging
in its originality and its attempt to break away from its European roots.

SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=EN:GRAPHIC DESIGN DAL GIAPPONE. 100 POSTER 2001 - 2010
DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:Japanese advertising graphics has a time-honoured\,
inventive and rich tradition\, unlike that of any other country. On this
premise\, on Friday the 27th of August\, in the St. Marks’ Square Galler
y\, the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation will be inaugurating the exhibition
GRAPHIC DESIGN FROM JAPAN. 100 POSTERS 2001-2010\, curated by Rossella Men
egazzo. One hundred posters\, selected from amongst the thousands of works
submitted each year for the most prestigious awards\, representing the be
st of Japanese graphics over the last ten years. \n\nAlso\, on the 15th of
August this year\, there will be the commemoration of sixty-five years si
nce the tragedy of Hiroshima (and of Nagasaki on the 9th of August)\, an e
vent remembered annually and with a great sense of responsibility by the m
ajor Japanese graphic designers with a series of posters entitled “Hiros
hima Appeals”\, one of the most significant awareness-raising campaigns
in the sphere of graphic art. Some of these posters\, the most representat
ive ones from the last ten years\, have been selected for the exhibition i
n memory of the thousands of direct and indirect victims of the explosion
of the two atomic bombs.\n\nThe exhibition\, featuring the most significan
t works produced over the last ten years both by great masters and more re
cent artists of promise\, includes posters selected by a committee made up
of two contemporary masters of graphic art\, Kazumasa Nagai and Shin Mats
unaga\, in collaboration with the International Hokusai Research Centre\,
and are representative of the works produced by Tokyo's main associations
of graphic designers and art directors\, such as the Art Directors’ Club
(ADC)\, the Japan Grafic Designers’ Association (JAGDA) and the Type Di
rectors Club (TDC). The initiative thus becomes a compendium not only of J
apanese graphic creativity but also of the long and fruitful working relat
ionship and cultural promotion established between Italy and Japan in this
  field for over thirty years.

DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:On 5 June an exhibition that is surprising in its n
ovelty will open in the Magazzino del Sale\, whose machinery of display ha
s been designed by Renzo Piano. Presenting the work of a dominant figure i
n modern and contemporary art\, the sculptor Louise Bourgeois\, it has bee
n curated by Germano Celant in collaboration with Jerry Gorovoy of the Lou
ise Bourgeois Studio\, New York. On show in the spectacular Venetian space
\, in an architectural setting designed to house drawings and sculptures\,
will be her almost unknown output of works made out of fabric\, such as t
he rich series of her Fabric Drawings\, created between 2002 and 2008\, an
d the light presence of her Cells\, like Conscious and Unconscious\, 2008.
\nThis set of works\, enriched by a comprehensive anthology of images of
the artist’s entire production of sculpture\, is reproduced in its entir
ety\, almost as if to form a general catalogue of the subject\, in the vol
ume Louise Bourgeois. The Fabric Works\, edited by Germano Celant and publ
ished by Skira\, Milan.\n\nIn the artist’s former Studio at the Zattere\
, converted into an exhibition space under the supervision of Renzo Piano
and on a design by the Atelier Traldi\, with the coordination and directio
n of the engineer Maurizio Milan\, an unfamiliar aspect of Emilio Vedova
s work will be presented from 5 June to 19 September: his interest in the
three-dimensional\, environmental and theatrical intervention\, where scu
lpture dominates. In the form of an essential historical overview\, the ex
hibition\, curated by Germano Celant and entitled Emilio Vedova Scultore\,
sets out to explore\, through models and large sculptural works\, this fa
cet of his expression in which the artist showed an interest from 1953 to
 1997.

tista\, designer” is an all-round exploration of the protean activities
of Giambattista Piranesi (Venice 1720 - Rome 1778)\, one of the most fasci
nating\, complex and multifaceted\nartists in 18th-century Europe. Thirty
years after the two exhibitions held by the Institute of Art History to ma
rk the bicentennial of the artist’s death\, the Giorgio Cini Foundation
has organised another striking show to celebrate his inventiveness and ima
gination. In addition to around 300 prints selected from the complete work
s held in\nthe Cini Foundation graphic collections\, the exhibition also f
eatures a series of ad hoc creations embodying Piranesi’s language\, sty
le and natural fl air for “crossing over” – in some cases in an almo
st frenzied way – ancient and modern formal repertories in ingenious com
binations. Visitors will thus be able to enter Piranesi’s “dark mind
after Marguerite Yourcenar’s description and explore his feverish imag
ination\, at times verging on paranoia\,\nby going into a tower with a 3D
projection of the Carceri d’Invenzione (“Imaginary Prisons”): mental
and visionary architecture stripped of any possible real building capacit
y\, somewhere between Baroque stage designs and fanciful caprices. On show
there will also be “re-workings” constructed ad hoc and exclusively f
or the exhibition by Adam Lowe and Factum Arte. They will enable visitors
to comprehend the artist’s original ideas and decorative\nlanguage close
up in three-dimensional renderings made of rare materials of some of Pira
nesi’s inventions in the series Diverse Maniere di adornare i Cammini (
Various Ways of Adorning Fireplaces”). These works will give the publi
c an idea of Piranesi’s prolific forge-workshop as an architect and desi
gner\, caught between Venetian caprice and Roman imperial splendour. The
recreations” of some pieces from his collection of antiques\, which\nh
e gathered to be sold on the antiquarian market\, on the other hand\, reve
al the iconographic background to his role as a forerunner of a new taste
for the antique and the consequent attraction his style exercised over a w
hole generation of artists\, architects and decorators in the age of Neocl
assicism. The last section of the exhibition is devoted to the celebrated
series of views of Rome. This is an exhibition within the exhibition featu
ring a\nsection of Piranesi prints accompanied by the same number of photo
graphs by Gabriele Basilico\, a fine art and documentary photographer. Ins
pired by the celebrated pages that the novelist Marguerite Yourcenar dedic
ated to Giambattista Piranesi in the early 1970s\, Basilico photographed t
he places featured in Piranesi’s views.

SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=EN:A Ballad of the Flooded Museum
DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:The exhibition\, hosted in the rooms of Palazzetto
Tito\, is a series of reflections on water as a contradictory element\; an
element that both supports and sweeps away\, preserves and destroys\, rem
embers and submerges for ever and that radically changes perceptions of sp
ace\, light and bodies. The project originates from research carried out a
little more than a year ago by the artistic duo\, inspired by the great F
rench oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and linked in particular to experimen
ts he conducted at the beginning of the 60s in an underwater habitat on th
e seabed off the coast of Sudan. The nature of Cousteau's experience and t
he artists' adaptation of it become a cue to thinking rationally about the
very concept of depth and abyss\, in both the physical and psychological
sense. The artists have proceeded with their re-interpretation and re-acti
vation amidst a collection of material and documents linked to the experim
ent\, developing it in different directions (photography\, drawings\, vide
os and sculpture installations)\, with a gradual\, constant jump in scale.
\nThus\, the exhibition\, using the domestic spaces of Palazzetto Tito\, a
ims to suggest a possible and poetic portrayal of the relationship between
underwater world and terra firma\, inviting reflections on the ephemeral
perception of space\, on water as display\, on the relationship between fi
ction and reality and on the actual nature of the work of art and its sett
ing in the museum. In this way the artists reveal the interest for the rel
ationship between context and content\, space and exhibition\, work of art
and spectator.\nAnd\, in fact\, the venue of the exhibition\, a building
that emerges from the water and is often flooded – as can happen only in
Venice –\, takes on a particular significance.

DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:For over a century\, the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundat
ion has been pursuing the goal of its founder\, Duchess Felicita Bevilacqu
a\, who dedicated her home\, Ca' Pesaro\, to the cause of promoting the wo
rk of young artists in Venice.\n\nthe young studio artists will use these
spaces to exhibit works created for the 12th Architecture Biennale 'People
meet in Architecture'.\nThe challenge is twofold: on the one hand\, they
will be using what is normally a domestic environment for an exhibition of
heterogeneous works\, distinguishable from one another by the different a
rtistic languages and techniques used to create them. And then\, on the ot
her\, they will be working with several themes concerning architecture\, t
he dominant influence in the association with the Venice Biennale.\nTheir
exhibits\, in this 'domestic setting'\, will include camouflaged installat
ions\, research\, urban works projects and discrete relational structures.
In this sense\, the freedom of action on the theme of architecture\, the
restricted exhibiting possibilities and the particular connotations of the
settings combine to form a provocative and stimulating context for the st
udio artists to put themselves to the test.

SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=EN:Gianni Galassi - Black & Blue
DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:Galassi’s images are focused around the relations
hip between light and shadow on the surfaces of urban and industrial build
ings. Which leads to a set of architectural visions geometrically combined
within the frame\, emphasizing a whole of elements which transcend the or
iginal function of the portrayed artifact\, and giving rise to unintention
al aesthetic values. The color palette is mostly confined to light grey\,
ochre/amber\, blue and black.\n\nThe exhibition title is inspired by the w
ide black colour-fields created by the shadows – the true subject of the
showcased photographs- and by the cut-outs of sky\, in a highly saturated
blue\, marking the compositional voids. The square format sets a distance
from the typical rectangular or panoramic frame of movies and TV. A symbo
l of geometrical purity\, the square suggests a formal reading of the imag
e\, which is freed from any narrative intention.\n

DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=EN:Owing to the quality of his painting\, his highly o

to him or with contemporaries\, the Venetian Giacomo Favretto (1849-1887)
is one of the most important masters of the Italian Nineteenth century.\n
A true “innovator' of the Venetian school during the second half of the
century\, he both revived and modernised the unique aspects of great Venet
o tradition – from Longhi to Tiepolo – that had been abandoned in the
first half of the Nineteenth century in favour of paintings of history and
landscape. \nIn his short but intense career\, Favretto was to become a h
ugely successful painter. He died prematurely in 1887\, leaving unfinished
on his easel Modern Stroll that might have represented a possible Venetia
n form of the most modern international trends although it was not until 1
895 that the Biennale was to be founded in Venice.
