Organised in 1863 by Napoleon III, the Salon des Refusés was an exhibition in which all the works of artists were admitted who had been refused by the “official” exhibition of the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris. The main composers in this concert ideally rally back the public in a “salon of the spurned” in a revival of the string quartets with piano that fell into oblivion.
