The 49th International Festival of Contemporary Music, directed by Giorgio Battistelli, deals with the theme of theatre and music. A special dedication is reserved for Luigi Nono, with the presentation of one of his early works, Y entonces comprendió.
Co-produced with the Teatro La Fenice Foundation, the Festival presents a special project, in collaboration with Musicadhoy, which offers a cross-section of contemporary Spanish music, which shows strong acceleration and great dynamism in all its sectors. The Festival begins at the Teatro La Fenice with Surrogate Cities-Venice by Heiner Goebbels, in the first full production ever in Italy. Also present are the French-Greek Georges Aperghis with Parcours, the English composer Gavin Bryars with The Sinking of the Titanic, the USA’s Morton Feldman with For Samuel Beckett, the German Wolfgang Rihm with the original Séraphin, Holland’s Michel van der Aa with One, while the Italians Roberto Doati and Carlo De Pirro present respectively Un avatar del diavolo and Messaggeri e messaggini, and finally Mauricio Kagel with Mare Nostrum.
Symphonic composition is represented by four of the most prestigious orchestras and three commissions from Italian composers. Together with the performance of historical composers Ligeti, Scelsi, Xenakis, Donatoni, Castiglioni, the programmes of the Orchestra of the Arena di Verona, the National Symphony Orchestra of Santa Cecilia, the National Symphony Orchestra of the Rai and the Orchestra of the Teatro La Fenice, will include new pieces from the young Italian composers Matteo Franceschini, Silvia Colasanti, and Luca Antignani.
