50th International Festival of Contemporary Music
September 29 - October 7, Biennale di Venezia

From the 29th of September to the 7th of October will be held the 50th International Festival of Contemporary Music of the Venice Biennial: nine days in which 48 different authors will give concerts, audio visual performances, musical shows and chamber music performances.

From Venice, the director Giorgio Battistelli will be opening a debate on the future of music, between perception and thought. The polyphony of voices which constitutes the new music is now being enriched by a novelty chapter, which as well as programming offers interesting encounters with philosophers and scholars of artistic language.

Va’ pensiero is the title chosen by Giorgio Battistelli for this, his third directorship of the Festival; the title alludes to a non-returnable solicitation, that of restoring music to its rightful place in contemporary debates, to bring it closer, once again, to modern thought. On the programme there are four meetings in the San Vidal Church, in order to reflect upon the reality, prospectives and possible dimensions of music. Thinking about music again; Music and the arts between technology and nature; Musical imagination; and Music and images are the important themes around which musicologists, composers, philosophers, and music critics such as Giacomo Manzoni, Peter Sloterdijk, Stafano Catucci, Emanuele Severino and Wolfgang Rihm will be asked to reflect. A Festival of international vocation, which, this year, has initiated co-production and collaboration with numerous foreign institutions: Madrid’s Musicadhoy, the Mexico City Festival, Paris’ Festival d’Automne, the Berliner Festspiele, Stuttgart’s Musik der Jahrhunderte, Madrid’s Teatro Espanol, Cologne’s MusikFabr, the Kunststiftung NRW.
