We put back in service a building no longer in use, actuating a conversion mechanism we gave this
building back to the urban fabric and to its inhabitants, as a space for cultural production. This project
is the result of a research led in “Piave” neighborhood, an area of Mestre city that acts as an opened
laboratory due to its social and cultural complexity and, that, due to its urban structure, clearly shows
economic and social resultants of contemporary urban processes.
Since December 2010 we worked on the mapping of abandoned spaces not too tempting for commercial
use. We tried to find out the ones most suitable for their structural and accesibility features. After this
searching period, we dealt with the owners of the spaces and Sottobosco got the chance to use them
as free concessions in return for aesthetic improvements.
Today, after the renovations made thanks to the help of our supporters, Sottobosco’s space is a flexible
and multipurpose place. It is made of: a studio for the collective’s planning, a workshop laboratory, and
a public area where you can find Sottobosco’s artists’ archive, a library dedicated to the no for profit
organisation and free press distribution. The apartment will also be the base where activities such as
ShowDesk, Poetry Lectures and artists’ workshops will take place.
This space has been thought as a sharable means, a place opened to the neighborhood and a starting
point for different activities, which could give the way to new ideas involving local committees and associations.
The aim of the project is to let this space be a centre for cultural production active also on
the local territory and community specific.
