This double opening date presents chamber music by Théodore Dubois and his contemporaries. The Dubois trio stands out for the density of its counterpoint and elaboration
of rhythms that are imbued with naturalness. On the other hand, the Cécile Chaminade trio is full of contrast and sudden changes; a pianist and French composer, she was the first woman to be awarded the Legion of Honour in 1913, despite all the difficulties connected to having
to reconcile being a woman and her talent for musical compositions.
The quintet genre with piano unifies the resources of the sonata for piano with that of the string quartet, reproducing the ambitions of a symphonic concerto in the setting of a romantic salon. There used to be an oboe
in the Dubois quintet but it has been replaced by a violin. The Reynaldo Hahn quintet is one of the most frequently performed chamber music works while the composer was alive, today known mainly for the operetta Ciboulette.
