Venezia si difende 1915 - 1918

At Casa dei Tre Oci the photography return to be the protagonist with an important exhibit from the 13th of September, first project after the Memorandum of Understanding between the Foundation and the Foundation of Venice Civic Museums of Venice: the agreement signed by Giuliano Segre, president of the Foundation of Venice, and Walter Hartsarich, president of the Civic Museums Foundation, provides the design and programming of activities aimed at enhancing, promotion and enjoyment of the artistic and cultural heritage of the city of Venice and in particular for the dissemination of the culture and history of Photography.

A hundred years after the beginning of the First World War, Venezia si difende 1915 - 1918 by Claudio Franzini, wants to tell with over 350 original images, from the Historic Archives of the Foundation of Venice Civic Museums located at the Palazzo Fortuny, the unusual situation of the city during the Great War with the intent to provide a comprehensive overview of the dramatic nature of the events and therefore does not disperse nor the historical perspective nor unsettled in our collective memory. 42 raids that were dumped on the city a total of 1029 bombs (300 only during the night between 26 and 27 February 1918), with the result of causing substantial damage to property, but above 52 deaths and 84 wounded among the population. If particularly dramatic reveal, to our eyes today, some images of the urban bombed, of great emotional impact it seems the documentation for one of the masterpieces irretrievably lost, which caused a strong international reaction: the fresco on the ceiling of the church of Scalzi work of Giambattista Tiepolo, destroyed in an attempt to hit the nearest railway station. The exhibition is divided into four sections virtually does not want to deal with documenting acts of war or acts of war (except in one case, one of the most sensational businesses carried out by the Italian Navy: the sinking of the battleship Wien in the port of Trieste accomplished by Mas led by Lieutenant Luigi Rizzo) but intends to describe extensively defensive strategies implemented, the complex task of preventive protection of the monuments with the 'saccate' and masonry reinforcement, removal of precious art treasures, the transformation of the turrets city in stations warning and air defense of naval riflemen and volunteers, the braking balloons that were raised to obstruct the airspace. On the other hand we illustrate the difficulties of everyday life: the blackout, shelters, hospitals, removal of debris, the withdrawal of bank deposits after Caporetto. An important section is devoted to the effects of air attacks suffered. Finally, a section is devoted to postcards. Epica military and portraiture, advocacy campaigns and subscriptions comprise the topics of this body of artwork, including two series of works dedicated to Venice and Trieste Cadorin Venetian Guido Guido Marussig, made during the years of conflict. At the conclusion of the exhibition documents the celebrations in honor of the armed forces that wanted the defense, and the commemorations of soldiers and civilians in the years that followed.
