Although his name is often linked to famous concertante
works for violin (Symphonie espagnole) and cello (Cello
concerto), Édouard Lalo also wrote some chamber music pages
of real quality, which this concert allows to be rediscovered
through a programme built around the piano. The Trio No. 3,
the last he wrote, brings together Lalo’s two preferred
instruments. They continued to communicate with the piano
in the intense Sonata for cello, in the picturesque Guitare for
violin, of Spanish inspiration, and in the Romance-sérénade
for violin and orchestra, here transcribed for violin and piano.
