A favoured genre for which the two composers
gave free rein to an eminently romantic
lyricism, the trios on the programme for
this concert are the second attempt for this
group, both for the violinist Lalo and the
pianist Chaminade. These trios are both
distinguished, not only by their frenzied
nature, but by a powerful counterpoint
density, an extreme harmonic tension and
the genuinely orchestral treatment of the
instrumental writing. The considerable sonic
power and some passages that cannot but
recall the writing of Brahms are part of the
prerogatives of two works that, furthermore,
never renounce an entirely French form of
clarity and elegance.
