La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus), directed by Ursel and Karl-Ernst Herrmann, has been performed throughout Europe for over twenty years now, to the extent that it has become a classic theatre production. From its debut in
Brussels, to its revival in Salzburg from 1992 to 1997, from its staging in London in 2000, at the Paris Opera in 2005 and in Prague from 2006 to 2010, to the new production at the Royal Theatre in Madrid in 2012, the opera’s timeless and austere staging by the German couple has kept its stylishness intact, revisiting the masterpiece by Mozart composed in 1791. Indeed, this was to be his last Italian opera as he died later the same year, and he succeeded in transforming one of the best works written fifty years earlier by the great, but rather old-fashioned Metastasio, into a fine opera seria.
